If I had to summarise my training in one paragraph so as not to bore you, I would say that there were a few key moments that marked my educational pathway:
Mydegree in modern foreign languages and literatures (English and Spanish)<\/strong>, with a dissertation in English on functional linguistics. In Italy, we graduates with a four-year honours degree are addressed as \u201cDoctors\u201d and it does make one feel important; however, achieving this qualification was only the driver that led me to leave my country and go abroad to forge my experience<\/strong>. I arrived in Spain in 2002 <\/strong> nd fell in love with the sound of the words, the culture and the people.<\/p>\n

In Madrid I perfected my Spanish, achieved bilingualism<\/strong> and continued to practice my English. I made every effort to blend myself into the environment and become imbued with the language without ever losing my Italian essence. I succeeded, and when I trained as a simultaneous interpreter in Mario Le\u00f3n\u2019s prestigious course<\/strong>, it opened the doors to congresses, conferences and events.<\/p>\n

After a few years I also discovered that my voice could have greater weight in the way the message was transmitted, so I also decided to make my way into the field of voiceovering<\/strong>. Remedios M\u00e1rquez was my mentor in Spanish diction while I studied voice techniques in Italian on my own and started to record.<\/p>\n

I have worked as an interpreter since 2006 at all kinds of events<\/strong>, conferences, congresses, press conferences, technical training courses, commercial liaison interpreting and meetings, trade fairs and negotiations.<\/p>\n

I work for direct clients<\/strong>, for audiovisuals agencies and translating and interpreting agencies and for PCOs<\/strong>. However, it often happens that one is hired by a colleague who is building a team of interpreters in several languages. So all the time our role is to be either a hiree or a hirer, which means we are never bored.<\/p>\n

Each congress, each event<\/strong>, each conference is a different experience that sweeps us all-out into new and often challenging situations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Interpreting is a technique, but it is also an art.<\/strong> We are the nexus between speaker and listener.<\/p>\n

We always try to do a good job<\/strong>. Sometimes we succeed brilliantly, others we do it correctly, others not so much.<\/p>\n

The factors<\/strong> that come into play are prior preparation, speed at which the orator speaks, quality of the sound reaching the cabin, type of speaker, whether or not they are used to speaking in public, whether they have much or little time, the accent, tone of voice, etc.<\/p>\n

All these factors can turn your interpreting into a failure or a success.<\/b>.<\/p>\n

What is always very helpful is to get into the speaker\u2019s head<\/b>, understand what they want to express and anticipate what they are about to say<\/b>; it\u2019s not always possible to do this, but I often do succeed.<\/p>\n

This kind of empathy with the speaker allows me to perceive where they are speaking from and what they seek to convey<\/b>. Although it may seem a small matter, this aspect is crucial for me. I don\u2019t believe that the machines of the future will be able to achieve such a rapport.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

In interpreting, while it is true that I have worked in very many terminological fields, from medical to hair styling to labour unions, commercial events of every kind and European congresses, the area I like best is dental science and implants, which requires a great deal of terminological and descriptive precision and much advance preparation.<\/p>\n

I should emphasise that, for any kind of event, it is always a necessity to prepare with great care, even when the client does not send us material sufficiently in advance or does not want to send it for reasons of privacy (which absolutely kills us).<\/p>\n

As for translation, I started in 2003 and I can now say that I\u2019ve become skilled in various fields, to mention a few:
tourism, technical, economics, medical, editorial, religion, renewable energies, gastronomy, nutrition, architecture, accounting, etc.<\/p>\n

Having said that, if I have to highlight the specific area that has given me the most words it is legal-commercial and legal-judicial.<\/p>\n

It may not be the most exciting field, but given its difficulty, it is the one that has allowed me to build up a terminology base and has taught me to deal with truly dense and laborious writing.<\/p>\n
